Thursday 3 September 2009
A largely sunny day – the first for some time – still had strong westerly winds battering the island: potentially good seawatching weather. Early in the morning a couple of Grey Phalaropes were seen offshore with a feeding gathering of shearwaters, and a drake Wigeonflew past with 12 of the 25 Common Scoters that were seen. An impressive 120 Sandwich Terns, two Arctic Skuas, three Great Skuas, 20 Dunlins, two Redshanks and a Ringed Ploveralso passed in front of the hide. In the afternoon, another stint in the hide produced close views of a smart-looking adult Sabine’s Gull feeding with Kittiwakes and a large flock of terns, comprising around 70 Common Terns and ten Arctic Terns, that were occasionally panicked by the appearance of three more Arctic Skuas. A Balearic Shearwater was also seen in the afternoon. A Greenshank was with the usual waders roosting in the harbour, and a Garden Warbler was feeding on berries in Ty Capel garden.
