Tuesday 5 June 2018

It was a quieter day for migrants today owing partly to the fact that we've switched our focus to monitoring the island's breeding seabirds, many of which now have hatching chicks. Billy and Josie spent the afternoon counting Herring Gull nests and Guillemots around the East Side, whilst Iccy Steve continued with some DIY jobs around the Observatory compound.

Birds logged today included four Fulmars, 320 Manx Shearwaters, 14 Gannets, a Grey Heron, a Whimbrel, a Curlew, a Little Owl, two Stonechats, 11 Wheatears, four Sedge Warblers, three Chiffchaffs, a Willow Warbler, two Chaffinches, three Goldfinches and 20 Linnets.

Brief views were in the Withies of this stunning moth, Anania lancealis. I'll have to check properly back through the records but it may well be a first for the island! The caterpillars feed on Hemp Agrimony and its favoured habitat is typical of the Withies - marshy woodland!

Another day with a perfect sunset.
