Another productive day with blue skies and sunshine from dawn till dusk! Bird of the day was a male Gadwall which was recorded by Mark Carter in Henllwyn Bay, to give some perspective, that is Bardsey's 15th record. A Black Redstart was sighted at West Coast. Ravens are gathering nest material, and a total of 12 were recorded over the mountain and surrounding fields. Migrant Goldcrests and Chiffchaffs have poured onto the island in the last two days and there were plenty about today. A quick ringing session mid-morning at Cristin yielded a mix of exclusively the two species with around 25 birds caught. Other records include: a Skylark in the Lowlands, three Sand Martins over the Narrows and four Little Owls around the mountain.

Over the last couple of days, Chiffchaffs and Goldcrests have been feeding on the conifers at Cristin and the Plantation. Ben Porter has been on Bardsey for the weekend and discovered that the reason why was that they were feeding on spruce aphids that are covering the trees.

Chiffchaffs have been largely feeding in the islands conifers,
but they will also take flying insects wherever they can

Unfortunately, today was the last day for Mike and Linda who have spent the week volunteering at BBFO in order to get the accommodation ready for visitors later in the season. They've really been a great help and we thank them for all their effort. Happily, Linda will be back in June!
