Friday 19 March 2021

Today started calm and overcast with moderate gusts of 16mph from the north. During the morning census, Megan and Stuart walked to the south end and relocated the Glaucous Gull that has been present around Bardsey and the mainland peninsular over the winter. A small nick in the primaries on the left-wing indicates that it is the same individual seen over the winter.

Glaucous Gull (possibly a hybrid) on Henllwyn today

Two Fieldfares were seen in the lowlands, and eight Teals were on Pwll Cain, inadvertently flushed soon after being seen and landed in the sea off the West Coast. Later in the afternoon, a Reed Bunting was seen at Carreg and Meadow Pipit numbers picked up dramatically from the morning and a total count of 225 was taken in the afternoon.

The morning was spent moving food around and organising shelf space before a second trip to Pen Cristin to look at the gull. After getting back from Pen Cristin there was mowing and strimming to be done around the obs as the grass had grown an impressive amount over the winter. Gareth has been out fishing and bringing in crabs for the island, too.
