The first calm day in a long time allowed the nets to be opened in the Observatory garden and in the Withies. It was quiet with a female Whitethroat and four new Chiffchaffs at the Observatory and a new Song Thrush and Sedge Warbler in the Withies.

Sam and Megan started the Manx Shearwater census today at the North of the East Side. This is the hardest section as it is in the middle of the gull colony and there are many angry adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls to contend with.

Stuart covered most of the island today with the highlight being a summer plumage Golden Plover on the South End. There was also one Swift over and a Spotted Flycatcher at Nant. A flock of 17 Choughs flew over the Mountain towards the South End and disappeared from sight. This is uncommon at this time of year as most Choughs should be paired up at nest sites.

Golden Plover

Birds today: eight Gannets, two Ringed Plovers, one Golden Plover, six Whimbrels, two Curlews, 14 Turnstones, one Swift, one Sand Martin, 17 Swallows, six House Martins, eight Sedge Warblers, five Whitethroats, 11 Chiffchaffs, one Spotted Flycatcher, 25 Choughs, five Siskins, 13 Goldfinches, 15 Lesser Redpolls
