The weather took a downturn today, thick fog kept rolling in throughout the day, but at least it brings a bit of atmosphere to the island.
There was not a lot of activity in the way of migrant passerines, a new Willow Warbler was caught in the Heligoland and a Willow Warblers, Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and Sedge Warblers have been heard singing in the Withies and up at Nant.
There were Manx Shearwaters flying close into the shore all day and this was enough to inspire a morning and afternoon seawatch at the North End. It was fairly quiet, but good views were had of the common seabirds which is more than most people could ask for on a drizzly, foggy day.
Curlew, Whimbrel, Dunlin and Turnstone made up the wader species today, but it won't be long before we get return passage of some more arctic breeders (or perhaps failed breeders!).
Birds today: one Fulmar, 458 Manx Shearwaters, 29 Gannets, one Grey Heron, four Common Scoters, one Dunlin, one Whimbrel, two Curlews, four Turnstones, one House Martin and three Lesser Redpolls.
