Monday 30 August 2021

It was another fairly quiet day with a few common migrants passing through including two Sand Martins, two Whinchats, three Spotted Flycatchers and two Whitethroats. A bit of seawatching off the West Coast included two Risso's Dolphins close to the shore, an Arctic Skua and a Great Skua.

It was another good session for moths with a trap at Nant and another at the Obs. The highlights were a fresh Blood-vein, another Treble-bar and some scarce micro-moths (if you like that kind of thing). New for the year were Flame Carpet and Ling Pug

On the weekly guided walk Stuart was lucky enough to give a wader identification session on Solfach with Dunlin, Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Turnstone all feeding along the shoreline. It wasn't easy especially with different ages and moults. Whilst on the Narrow our intern Louis found the first Grey Seal pup of the year.

Stuart continued checking the Manx Shearwater productivity burrows and ringing any chicks. It is starting to show as his hands now look like they have been stuck in a blender!

Fiona and Rob are back volunteering this week and have finished clearing a path up to the viewing bench at the top of the Obs garden. This means that there is no need to walk up through the Solar Array. It was a prickly job but a big thank you to them both.
