This morning we said goodbye to the students after a fantastic week filled with birding and teaching them about work at the Observatory. We hope to see you all again soon!

Once we’d rapidly cleaned Cristin and welcomed the new guests for the week, we headed out on census. The continuing north-easterly winds grounded many migrating Wheatears, resulting in the higher count of the year so far with 189 (mostly Greenland Birds). The winds eased up somewhat later in the day and resulted in a Blue-headed Wagtail on Solfach, a Ring Ouzel, two Whitethroats, a Crossbill, a Grasshopper Warbler and a Dunlin.

Other bird highlights of they were four Common Sandpipers, a Lesser Redpoll, a Siskin, a House Martin, 21 Blackcaps, 16 Willow Warblers and three Chiffchaffs.

The moth trap resulted in 10 moths of four species, with Red-green Carpet and a Red Chestnut.
