Despite the torrential rain, it turned into a pleasant days birding with the easterly winds bringing in some much-needed migrants. The Merlin and Great Spotted Woodpecker were still present today, continuing their prolonged stay on the island. A Water Rail was heard squealing from the Withies again today. With the turbulent seas pushing waders onto the rocks around the Narrows today, some made their way into log, with an impressive 47 Purple Sandpipers logged, the largest flock this year, also present were two Snipes, a Whimbrel, 14 Redshanks and 21 Turnstones.

Inland the first Swallow of the year passed through being battered by the rain, chats comprised of two Stonechats and two Wheatears. More impressively a male Ring Ouzel was a nice surprise on the mountain side. Adorning the bushes today were two Blackcaps, also the first of the year, 17 Chiffchaffs and nine Goldcrests.

Finally, we move onto the highlight of today, some small finch passage resulted in 18 Chaffinches and Bullfinch, however the star of the show was a stunning female Hawfinch which kept everyone entertained as it explored the island for most of the day, occasionally dropping into the garden at Cristin.
