We were greeted this morning by an overcast sky with calm Southerly
winds. It quickly appeared very promising when banks of clouds passed overhead
resulting in intermittent showers.
Some raptors made their way into log today, including three
Sparrowhawk, one Buzzard and a Merlin. The highest Whimbrel count this season
consisted of 16 individuals, most of which were seen in the Wetlands along with
two Snipes. A small passage overhead was noted consisting primarily of
hirundines, 4 Sand Martins, 14 Swallows, five House Martins and two Tree Pipits
were recorded. On the land there seemed to be a small fall of warblers a
Grasshopper Warbler was heard reeling in the Wetlands, as was a singing Sedge
Warbler. A scattering of other warblers consisted of three Whitethroats, one
Garden Warbler, 18 Blackcaps, 21 Chiffchaffs, 88 Willow Warblers and four
Goldcrests.
Other notable sightings included two of yesterday’s Hooded
Crows, and some more finch passage was once again recorded. Today a total of
three Siskins, 168 Goldfinches, 58 Linnets and eight Lesser Redpolls were
seen.
