A fantastic selection of newly arrived migrants were recorded in today's south-westerly winds, not least of which was an Osprey which caused some excitement as it flew over me at Cafn whilst I led our weekly guided wildlife walk! Participants were treated to superb close views as it slowly made its way over the wetlands, and a quick radio call ensured everyone else on the island connected before it departed off the north end a few minutes later. There were some good tallies of common migrants across the island, with no less than two Yellow Wagtails, two Redstarts, a Tree Pipit, a Grasshopper Warbler, 12 Sedge Warblers and 183 Willow Warblers spicing up what has up until now been a quiet start to May.

Other birds recorded today included two Fulmars, 50 Manx Shearwaters, four Gannets, a Grey Heron, a Sparrowhawk, a Kestrel, a Merlin, a Peregrine, seven Purple Sandpipers, 24 Whimbrels, eight Turnstones, three Sandwich Terns, two Collared Doves, a Little Owl, 37 Swallows, four Stonechats, 14 Wheatears, 20 Blackcaps, seven Chiffchaffs, a Goldcrest, three Chaffinches, a Siskin, 55 Goldfinches, 74 Linnets, a Lesser Redpoll and two Bullfinches.

In the rush to see the Osprey, everyone ran out of the observatory without a camera. By the Steve got his camera out the bird had been reduced to a disappointing speck in the distance. You'll have to take our word for it that it did give a very nice fly past!

Grasshopper Warblers are always nice to see up close in the hand.

We often see them at sea, but it's not often that terns actually alight on the island. These two Sandwich Terns gave nice views in Solfach during our guided walk.

We like to ensure participants on our guided walks are shown a wide array of wildlife, from little to large. One minute we're turning our binoculars upside-down to study Golden-hair Lichen up close, the next we're watching an Osprey fly over us. Only on Bardsey!
