looking up at the Cristin from the bottom of the Obs track.
The calm weather meant nets were opened in the morning, both at Cristin and in the Plantation at Nant. Conditions were perfect and some more birds had come in since yesterday - nets were left open at Cristin until mid-afternoon as Goldfinches were present in good numbers. By the time nets were closed, 18 had been ringed, this is a very respectable total and nearly half of the total ringed last year.
as in much of the UK, Goldfinches are on the increase on Bardsey and
who could complain, they're stunning!
Around mid-morning, two Buzzards and a Red Kite were seen flying over the Observatory. Red Kites remain to be rare birds on Bardsey and the record is, perhaps surprisingly, only the 29th record for the island - all but one have been since 1987. Elsewhere on the raptor front, a Kestrel flew over Pen Cristin early afternoon and a Peregrine was hunting along the West Coast also.
Over on the Narrows, an addition to the year list was waiting in the form of a Lapwing. Existing wader species had also increased in number with seven Whimbrels today being the highest count of the year so far, these should start building up quite quickly soon.
Some visible migration today included two Tree Pipits which flew over the Observatory early on, and 16 Swallows which moved through the island during the rest of the day. Wheatear numbers had increased, as they had at other sites along the West Coast. 27 were recorded on the island today's with one being a good candidate for the larger 'Greenland' Wheatear of the race leucorhoa. More of this race should begin turning up soon, with some being particularly striking due to their sometimes noticeably larger size and much warmer, orangey plumage.

Other birds of note today were: 18 Gannets, seven Shelducks, 89 Oystercatchers, one Curlew, 232 Herring Gulls, one Little Owl, 69 Meadow Pipits, four White Wagtails, 45 Blackcaps, 10 Chiffchaffs, 38 Willow Warblers, two Blue Tits, two Great tits and 32 Goldfinches.
Ringing today produced: Blackcap 26, Blue Tit 2, Chiffchaff 6, Goldfinch 18, Great Tit 1, Willow Warbler 8. Total 61 birds of 6 species.
