Regular visitors to Bardsey will know that Cafn looking this calm is a very rare sight!
Sunrise from Pen Cristin
Willow Warblers were the birds of the day, a decent arrival overnight meant a year high count of 221 was had across the island. They were making use of the lower vegetation on the west side of the mountain between Cristin and Nant, mainly. These tiny long-distance migrants have made their way up from sub-Saharan Africa to breed in Britain and other countries across Europe. Quite amazing for something that weighs around 9 grams, similar to the weight of a £1 coin.

A couple of firsts for the year occurred today, one was an anticipated flyover Tree Pipit up at Nant, but three Common Crossbills at Nant were also a very nice addition to the year list!
Blackcaps also had a good day, 40 were present at Cristin alone, and a total of 81 was recorded across the island. This species has perhaps a more complex migration than Willow Warbler, many Blackcaps migrate to Britain for the winter to escape the harsher continental winter climate. But many British breeding Blackcaps have spent the winter in southern Europe and are on their way back to breeding grounds in Britain and more northern European countries.

Insect life is starting to build around the island, Common Carder Bees are buzzing around every flower on the island, along with White-tailed Bumblebees and Buff-tailed Bumblebees. Small Tortoiseshells are also waking up after the winter and have been seen more regularly this week, and a Large White seen today was the first of the year. However, Peacocks are the most numerous butterfly at the moment with at least five being recorded daily around the Obs, Nant and the along the track, respectively.
