The strong winds finally died down today and the sun came out, with temperatures reaching a balmy 11⁰C. It was calm enough to open the nets in the Observatory garden. The first net round produced 26 birds, the majority of which were Chiffchaffs along with the first Willow Warblers of the year. With a large number of birds migrating through the nets were also opened at Nant in the afternoon.

Following the lack of visible migration due to the strong winds over the past few days it was amazing to see a sudden influx of Spring migrants. Ten Swallows were seen across the island along with 11 Sand Martins. The first Sedge Warbler was also seen in the Withies. A total of 186 Chiffchaffs, 130 Willow Warblers, 69 Blackcaps, two Firecrests, three White Wagtails and 20 Wheatears were recorded across Bardsey today.

Other signs of Spring are also appearing with the Marsh Marigolds flowering across the Withies and a few Common Dog Violets flowering in patches along the dry stone walls. The first butterflies were also recorded today with four Peacocks and two Small Tortoiseshells.
