A welcome arrival of calmer conditions brought with it an equally welcome wave of migrant birds. A pleasant day’s birding included the first flava Wagtail and Grasshopper Warblers of the year, as well as good totals of 125 Willow Warblers, 44 Chiffchaffs and 239 Meadow Pipits. 61 Swallows, 17 Sand Martins and eight House Martins passed through, and other noteworthy landbirds included 17 Pied Wagtails, 12 White Wagtails, four Redwings, three Wheatears, seven Goldcrests, a Black Redstart, two Merlins and two Buzzards. A Jacksnipe and a Snipe were flushed from the ‘badlands’ and a couple of Ringed Plovers were on Solfach. A few birds were noted passing by at sea including 37 Fulmars, 13 Common Scoters, six Black-headed Gulls and two unseasonal Common Gulls.
