Calm and pleasant weather failed to produce as many birds as anticipated, and it was actually a very quiet day. Visible landbird passage consisted of a couple of Lapland Buntings, a Tree Pipit, eight Grey Wagtails, eight Skylarks, 100 Swallows, eight House Martins and a Sand Martin. A Treecreeper was at Cristin, three Great Tits and two Blue Tits were seen, 70 Chaffinches, 22 Goldfinches and four Siskins were in the various gardens and a small selection of warblers included the lingering Melodious Warbler, a Reed Warbler, a Blackcap, five Chiffchaffs, two Willow Warblers and 13 Goldcrests. Two Redwings and three Song Thrushes were at Nant and a Water Rail was in the withies, while passage raptors included two Merlins, three Sparrowhawks and three Kestrels. Two Mediterranean Gulls and 35 Common Scoters were the only noteworthy seabirds.

The calm conditions lent themselves to cetacean watching and by the end of the day six Bottlenose Dolphins, two Common Dolphins and four Risso’s Dolphins had been seen.

On the moth front; due to calm winds a steady number of moths were caught in Cristin Withie: a Red line Quaker was amongst the usual Lunar Underwings, Feathered Ranunculus and Small Square-Spots today, whilst a Canary-shouldered Thorn was caught yesterday.

  1. I love herons. They're so common but they still fascinate me every time I see one... Nice shot.
