This is the first Eastern Subalpine Warbler on the island since a male was seen above Ty Pellaf on 20 April 2011, whilst this bird is surprisingly the first to be trapped and ringed since a Western was caught in late April 2011. There seems to have been a decent arrival of this species in western UK recently, with two males trapped and ringed on the Calf of Man, and a brief sighting of a female on Skokholm yesterday. Whether the Skokholm bird (voiced to be of the Eastern race) is the same as ours is debatable.

And again in the hand, showing the diagnostic white wedge in T5
In other news, just two Spotted Flycatchers on the island represented the extent to which migrants had moved on last night. Some noteworthy sightings during the day included a Firecrest, a Reed Warbler at Ty Nesaf, an interesting Lesser Whitethroat at Cristin and two Garden Warblers.

The Lesser Whitethroat- note the extensive white in the outer tail feathers. Lower: this bird had a wing formula of P2=6/7, which should be P2=5/6 in a 'standard' carruca. Further measurements and characteristics certainly suggest this bird is of Eastern origin!

This cracking Firecrest was also trapped at Cristin
