Thursday 2 October 2014

A total of 75 species were seen during the day- a total amassed by the combined efforts of an OBS vs. NGB bird race. The weather in the morning was perfect for encouraging a good movement of passerines overhead: light south-easterly winds, clear skies and a chilly nip to the air.

Visible migration in the morning consisted of 205 Skylarks, 19 Swallows, a House Martin, 380 Meadow Pipits, 6 flava Wagtails, 32 Grey Wagtails, 68 Pied Wagtails, one White Wagtail, 86 alba Wagtails, 78 Chaffinches, nine Siskins, eight Goldfinches, 864 Linnets and a Lapland Bunting. The Hoopoe was found above Ty Pellaf, and showed well for some; singles of Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat and Pied Flycatcher were recorded in the vegetated areas, along with two Willow Warblers; and a Pomarine Skua, two Great Skuas, eight Mediterranean Gulls, eight Sandwich Terns and four Common Terns flew past out to sea.

The Hoopoe stayed on the island for its fifth day, on a similar fashion to the last one that turned up on Bardsey. The 2011 bird remained for about three days, and was trapped and ringed on its second.

The Pied Flycatcher showed well in Cristin Withy
