A light drizzle kicked in early in the morning, the kind of rain that doesn't look like much but still manages to soak you through and through if you're out in it long enough. It didn't make morning census a particularly pleasant experience, and we just managed to finish in time to head over to the jetty and wave goodbye to Ben who's off back down to Falmouth before his final exams at university. Ben is always willing to lend a hand when it comes to bird work at the observatory and we wish him all the best for the coming weeks!
There wasn't too much change in avian activity from yesterday with today's sightings including five
Fulmars, a
Gannet, a
Sparrowhawk, a
Merlin, four
Whimbrels, two
Redshanks, 20
Turnstones, two
Kittiwakes, 14
Swallows, a
Stonechat, 12
Wheatears, a
Blackcap, just three
Willow Warblers, a
Goldcrest, a
Chaffinch, three
Goldfinches and 30
Linnets.
As often seems to happen after a day of constant drizzle, the clouds suddenly lifted late in the evening, cloaked the island in a warm glow for half an hour before sunset. Stunning.
