Gentle northerlies overnight that carried on into today held some promise of migration. As it was calm, nets were naturally opended in the Withies, Nant and the Obs. Meadow Pipits and Wagtails seemed to be migrating through early on, with Grey Wagtails being heard quite frequntly over the Obs. To our delight two of them were caught! These represent the 2nd and 3rd since last year, before which, there was a 23 year absence! Ben was on the South End and heard a Tree Pipit fly over, a species seldom seen perched on Bardsey. He also found the 2nd seal pup of the season with its parent, so after the odd early one a few weeks back, this could be the real start of the pupping season.

Up at Nant a cracking male Redstart was seen, and interestingly, 14 Buzzards cruised just over the north end of the mountain and headed east. A Pied Flycatcher was also present, and a Whinchat later in the day, too.

Over Henllwyn in the mid-morning a Merlin flew over and seemed to be having a quick attempt at catching Rock Pipits and wagtails before flying off south. A Wall Brown was found on the mountain, too, the first record this year.
Later in the day the Heligoland was put back up on the beach, which it is now safe to do as the windy weather is behind us. Hopefully, we will catch some White Wagtails which migrate further than our Pied Wagtails. They move through the British Isles, from breeding grounds in Iceland/Greenland to Iberia and North Africa. Pied Wagtails are largely resident in the UK but some migrate to southern Europe in the winter.
Once the Heligoland was up it was time to ring more Manx Shearwater chicks. Today the area included the North West Fields. Five were ringed from productivity burrows before calling it a day.
Totals today include: two Lesser Redpolls, 90 Linnets, nine Siskins, 14 Choughs, 12 Willow Warblers, three Whitethroats, 55 Stonechats, 62 White Wagtails, 13 Grey Wagtails, 180 Meadow Pipits, 167 Swallows, 17 Black-headed Gulls, 52 Curlews, 15 Buzzards, three Sparrowhawks.
Ringing Totals: Collared Dove 1, Wren 2, Dunnock 3, Robin 7, Sedge Warbler 1, Chiffchaff 1, Willow Warbler 10, Grey Wagtail 2, Goldfinches 2, Blackcap 1.
