Today was sunny all day, with a bit of patchy cloud too, but the heat really picked up in the middle of the day, a welcome change from some of the recent rainy weather.

Visible migration was slower today, with birds only really starting to move from around 08:30, White and Grey Wagtails were again the main feature, with 63 and 17 respectively being recorded today. The first Skylarks of the Autumn were also recorded today with 14 being counted through the day. Some hirundine passage is also becoming evident: one Sand Martin, 149 Swallows and 29 House Martins.

Nets were opened at the Observatory and in the Withies. Ringing was slow at the Obs, with only four birds being caught all morning, however this included another Grey Wagtail - only the 18th to be ringed on the island. Down in the Withies, Alex also caught a Grey Wagtail, and a White Wagtail, the first of the year. Along with the Wagtails, he caught a few Meadow Pipits to a tape, these are the first of the Autumn.

Fixing the Heligoland

The afternoon was spent beginning to put the new wire mesh on the Heligoland Trap in the garden, this will be a long process, but it is a good start, and will be a valuable tool for our autumn ringing efforts.
