Sam headed to the South End and the Narrows in the morning, the usual mix of waders were on Solfach with two Ringed Plovers, four Dunlin, six Redshank and nine Turnstone. Nearby on Carreg yr Henwy, a high tide roost of 41 Curlews had also been joined by six Whimbrels, this is a higher count of Curlew than we've had for a while.
Alex got on with some net ride and path clearance in the morning while the weather wasn't really any good for anything else, and then once the rain moved in again, he continued with photographing the breeding bird maps which stretch back to the late 80's.
Once the rain had properly cleared, George and Alex headed down to the Withies to open a few of the more sheltered nets as there were still some Willow Warblers around after yesterday's nice arrival. While opening nets, a Green Sandpiper flew south over the Withies calling loudly, this is a new species for the year, it appeared to continue south, as there isn't really any ideal habitat for this freshwater wader on the island. Ringing in the Withies wasn't overly productive, but it held a little more variety yesterday; unfortunately no flycatchers were caught though, despite one each of Spotted and Pied being present.
Willow Warbler
In the evening, George, Sam and Alex headed down to Cafe Enlli to take advantage of the 'Eat out to help out' half price food on offer! A lovely end to yet another great day on the island.
Other sightings today included: one Grey Heron, two Sparrowhawks, two Tree Pipits, one Grey Wagtail, three Robins, 125 Willow Warblers, two Goldcrests, two Spotted Flycatchers, one Pied Flycatcher and one Redpoll.
Ringing totals: 20 Willow Warblers, 2 Sedge Warblers, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Robin and 1 Wren. 25 birds of 5 species.
