Sunday 30 May 2021

Today was beautifully calm and sunny. The Manx Shearwater census took place first thing in the morning to avoid doing it in the midday sun which seemed to work well and good progress was made. The island was fairly quiet for migrants, which is to be expected at this point in the year.

Feeding frenzy on the North End

Waders today included some variety with a Lapwing and Sanderlings being recorded, other than that, the Narrows produced the usual suspects. Siskins were heard on several occasions, although how many there were was hard to determine as they were simply flying high over the mountain. Lesser Redpolls continue to inhabit the garden at the obs and are almost constantly calling. Sedge Warblers were very vocal today, too, mostly heard from the withies. In the last couple of days, Willow Warblers have begun to sing at the obs and up at Nant which adds a nice soundtrack to the island.

Flock of Choughs

Birds today: Grey Heron, two Buzzards, one Lapwing, three Sanderlings, three Dunlins, two Whimbrels, six Curlews, two White Wagtails, one Spotted Flycatcher
