Thursday 15 July 2021

We were treated to yet another gloriously sunny day today, although it was windier than yesterday with a 15mph north-westerly blowing across the island, this died down slowly as the day went on.

It was an excellent morning for moths with 183 of 42 species. There were a few new for the year including Antler, Scalloped Oak and Drinker.

Stuart and Sam headed to the East Side quite early in the morning in order to monitor the breeding Fulmars and Kittiwakes, it was a successful trip and they also checked on the Storm Petrel nest which still had an adult sitting on an egg, this is good news, the due date for hatching will be around 31st July for this egg.

Early in the morning, there were signs of movement with a Black-tailed Godwit present on Solfach and two Sandwich Terns feeding in Henllwyn, these records are a promising sign of things to come. There was also still a good flock of Curlews roosting on Carreg yr Henwy at high tide, but there had seemingly been a clear-out of Redshanks.
