Saturday 14 August 2021

It was a drizzly start and it continued throughout the day with no wind to move it away. As is typical on Saturdays, the morning was spent cleaning before welcoming our new guests. The Welsh government has now allowed all hostels to open up in Wales and the Obs is now full with 11 guests staying this week.

As it was a calm morning Stuart and Louis opened up the nets at the Obs and although it was quiet they did manage to catch an adult Swallow and House Martin

In the afternoon the daily census was completed with lots of waders having dropped in with the low cloud. 65 Curlews, 56 Turnstones, nine Whimbrels, two Common Sandpipers, seven Redshanks and a Purple Sandpiper were seen across the Narrows and South End. Whilst on the South End Stuart found some Heather with white flowers.

An adult and juvenile Sandwich Tern were on the rocks on the Narrows and were later seen flying North up the West Coast. A Grasshopper Warbler was reeling briefly on the Mountain above Nant.

Birds today: four Fulmars, two Gannets, two Grey Herons, one Purple Sandpiper, nine Whimbrels, 65 Curlews, seven Redshanks, two Common Sandpipers, 56 Turnstones, two Sandwich Terns, one Grasshopper Warbler, two Whitethroat, one Blackcap, nine Willow Warblers,
