Gale force South Westerlies and heavy rain at times did not make for a pleasant day outside. Visibility was poor and little was noted on the sea.

Grey and wet...

Fiona spent her day working away at entering the summer's moth data into he database ready to write the report later in the year, whilst I spent much of the day preparing data for starting to write the 2020 Bardsey's Wildlife Report.

Just as we publish one, the next one begins...

Only 17 Gannets were counted and just four Shags. The Little Egret was still lingering and two herons were seen. Mallard numbers reached 29 and five Common Scoter passed by.

A Merlin the North End was the only raptor seen. Oystercatchers were keeping their heads down and numbered just 32. Seven Purple Sandpipers were seen amongst the 52 Turnstones, and the Whimbrel was still with the 40 Curlews.

Bird of the day goes to a Short-eared Owl seen at the Lighthouse by William as they both found a break in the weather and a Barn Owl was seen by Gareth as he made his way up to the Observatory at dusk. A Great Spotted Woodpecker was still at thee Observatory.

Two Redwings were recorded, one after dark and another at Nant and Mistle Thrush was seen at a few sites on the island. Three Blackcaps were seen around the island along with five Chiffchaffs and 11 Goldcrests. Six Great tits were utilising the feeder along with some of the 18 Chaffinches. late evening 20 of the 22 Siskins seen today dropped into the Observatory garden, Six Goldfinch and a Lesser Redpoll rounded up the days birds.

one of four Siskins trapped in the Heligoland today

The day was ended with a fantastic Curry Night and a celebration of Mine and Emma's 14th Wedding Anniversary. It was such a fantastic and light hearted evening - just what everyone needed!
