Sunday 1 May 2022

Strong south-westerlies and persistent drizzle was the name of the game today, which made for little of note in terms of birding. There was a small increase in waders noted, with six Dunlins, four Common Sandpipers, four Ringed Plovers, and 17 Whimbrels. In the evening, the poor birding conditions were ideal for dazzling, which resulted in six Purple Sandpipers being caught and (including a retrap from last year) and an Oystercatcher! Another highlight of the day however was a French-ringed Sedge Warbler that was caught in the Heligoland trap at Cristin.

Other birds present today were a Lesser Redpoll, a Goldcrest, eight Swallows, a Sedge Warbler, a Whitethroat, three Blackcaps, three Willow Warblers and a Chiffchaff.

Most of the day was spent catching up on desk-based work to make the most of the bad weather as we inputted this years' ringing data into DemOn, as well as updating our maps of the Island's breeding birds.
