Saturday 15 June 2024

Heavy rain showers passed through in the morning, clearing to a sunny afternoon sunny, however moderate south-westerly winds kept the temperature down.

It was very quiet on the bird front, so after an early start cleaning the Observatory for the Saturday guest changeover, the team headed out in the afternoon to check on our breeding Swallows. So far this season we have recorded seven confirmed pairs of Swallows nesting on the Island, unfortunately indicating that numbers are down from 11 pairs in 2023. This mirrors the anecdotal trend so far on the mainland, with many people across the UK reporting that they have fewer breeding Swallows near them. It is still early, so there is still time for them to finish nest building and even have second broods, and we will continue our monitoring.
