As is often the case in the middle of summer, changeover day didn’t bring a flood of records.

The main comings and goings were Greg heading off for his summer break, while Steve and Emma returned from theirs, refreshed and ready to go again.

There were a few nice non-avian highlight to note. Fourteen Red Admirals were dotted about, adding a splash of colour to the day. A Harbour Porpoise made a brief appearance off the North End, and four Common Dolphins were seen from the South End, which is always a treat.

Bird-wise, things were fairly quiet. Herring Gulls were busy catching flying ants, with a count of 173 between the Observatory and Nant. Most of the breeding auks have now moved on, but a few stragglers remain—four Razorbills and four Puffins were still hanging around off the North End.

There’s a hint of autumn in the air already, with the first signs of passerine migration starting to show. Willow Warblers have been trickling through over the past few days, and today’s total of seven was the highest so far this season.
