It was another busy day for the Young Birders today, with the fair weather a small but diverse selection of migrants were noted scattered across the island. After a night of Storm Petrel ringing, mist netting didn’t begin until a little later on today, none the less a few migrants were trapped largely concerning Willow Warblers and Wrens.

Dorsal fins were easy to pick up with the sea as calm as a millpond, six Harbour Porpoises, four Common Dolphins and 14 Risso’s Dolphins were noted out to sea, slowly passing the West Coast. Eight Painted Lady butterflies and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth were also indicative of some migration caused by the calm conditions.

Migration wasn’t restricted to Cetaceans and Lepidoptera, birds were a plenty as well. A total of 141 Shags were recorded a sharp rise in number. Whilst the heat allowed for some notable raptor passage, which culminated to a Marsh Harrier over the Wetlands, also seen however were a Sparrowhawk and two Kestrels. Waders were also noted in good stead, in total a Ringed Plover, four Sanderlings, one Snipe, four Whimbrels, 24 Curlews, eight Redshanks, three Common Sandpipers and one Turnstone were logged. Out to sea another nine Sandwich Terns and one Common Tern were noted.

Inland some impressive migration was observed, overhead passage consisted of 25 Swifts, one Sand Martin, 174 Swallows, 562 House Martins and a Tree Pipit! Also noted today were two Sedge Warblers, five Whitethroats, three Chiffchaffs, 33 Willow Warblers, a Siskin and a Lesser Redpoll.

This Marsh Harrier put on a good display hawking around the Wetlands of the island, before disappearing north over the Mountain

Another successful Storm Petrel ringing session around Pen Cristin resulted in 10 birds being caught and ringed
