We said goodbye to a great bunch of guests and welcomed on participants for this year's Young Birder's Week. We eased them into observatory life with a guided walk around the island and a BBQ, with views of
Risso's Dolphins off the west coast as we munched. There were plenty of migrant Willow Warblers to keep us entertained, with the final tally at 94 birds. However, with Pied Flycatchers and Wood Warblers turning up on island's to our south and north, we can't help but feel there should be something a little bit more exciting out there. The overhead passage was not to be sniffed at however. 245
Swallows and 121
House Martins is easily an underestimate for the number of hirundines that passed over the island today, with 15
Swifts joining them mid-afternoon.
Other birds logged today included three
Fulmars, 130
Manx Shearwaters, seven
Gannets, a
Grey Heron, 59
Common Scoters, a
Sparrowhawk, a
Kestrel, a
Peregrine, two
Ringed Plovers, five
Golden Plovers, a
Dunlin, four
Whimbrels, nine
Curlews, a
Redshank, a
Common Sandpiper, seven
Kittiwakes, two
Sandwich Terns, 12
Stonechats, four
Wheatears, a Sedge Warbler, two
Chiffchaffs, five
Chaffinches, 19
Linnets and two
Lesser Redpolls.
The first day of the Young Birder's Week ended in style, with a BBQ and cracking views of Risso's Dolphin breaching as the sun set behind Ireland's Wicklow Mountains.
