Although it was very windy today, the 40mph winds were southerly and were therefore quite warm. They also seemed to have a good effect on some migrants, namely Cuckoos and Spotted Flycatchers.
Spotted Flycatcher season appears to be getting underway here, today the first three of the year to be ringed were caught in the Heligoland trap in Cristin garden. A few more were seen at Nant, using the new fence lines to fly-catch from.
It's been a bit windy so the moth trap hasn't been out. Last night was cloudy and warm which was ideal and it yielded the first Bright-line Brown-eye of the year.
Up at Nant also were two male Cuckoos and a female which is a good total for the day, especially in such a small area. They could be seen flying around in the strong winds, and the males were singing from fence posts and higher up in the spruce trees.
Birds today: 14 Whimbrels, one Curlew, one Common Sandpiper, four Turnstones, three Cuckoos, 14 Swallows, one House Martins, three Sedge Warblers, three Whitethroats, seven Blackcaps, six Willow Warblers, eight Spotted Flycatchers and one Siskin.
Ringing totals: Spotted Flycatcher 3
