Today started off relatively overcast with plenty of wind, which then cleared into a bright sunny blustery afternoon. Stuart started off the day with the usual census of the South End, lots of juvenile gulls bobbing around and Whimbrel and Curlew on the Narrows. Two noisy Common Sandpipers were the highlight of the morning.

Louis our new long term volunteer who arrived yesterday was keen to get ringing as soon as he could. He got a pair of Stonechat in the heligoland to start of the day, after lunch and a bit of clearing vegetation of the net rides at Nant Withy he was delighted to catch two Wheatear using a spring trap on the West Coast and then rounded off the day with a couple of Willow Warblers in the heligoland before tea! Great start to a five week stint for our new arrival.

Juvenile Wheatear

There seems to have been an arrival of Willow Warblers with around 50 across the island. The Redstart continues to be elusive in the Gorse along the track past Plas.  Two moth traps were put out last night; one at the Obs and one in Cristin Withy. The withies trap was far superior with a Buff Tip and several new species for the year including Ear Moth and Bordered Beauty.

Bordered Beauty
