2022 - a new year

So after a short delay due to windy weather, we made it back to the Isle of the Blessed today.

I will be starting my 25th season on the island (!!) having arrived initially as a fresh faced 25 year old in 1998. Emma begins her 21st full season and Connor his 20th.

We left Southport at dawn (06:15), having spent the past few days shopping for supplies for the next few months. Driving through Aberdaron, we got our first views of a calm sea.

We arrived at Cwrt at 10am, loaded the lorry and made our way down Porth track to the boat. It was nice to have a quick chat with Earnest as we loaded up the Benlli III with our bags.

It wasn’t long before we were splashing over a very cam sea and getting our first views of the island.

Once back on the Island we were greeted by Gareth, Meriel, Mari and Emyr and not forgetting Moss!!

Gareth informed us that “Margaret’ was still here. Margaret is the name that has been given to the Cattle Egret that has been here since 18th January! And as we approached Cristin there she was with the sheep!!!

We began to unload, with help from Mari, and were greeted to sounds from singing Chiffchaffs, Stonechats and Blackbirds.

Connor and I fired up the solar array and all worked according to plan- instant power…

Emma saw a Wheatear on her way up the track, but we spent the afternoon cleaning our house and unpacking so did not see much else other than a few Chiffchaffs in the Observatory garden, and a Firecrest just below the Sycamore tree.

A quick inspection of Cristin showed us there is a lot of cleaning and painting to be done before guests arrive in a few weeks!

Mouldy walls

Damp walls!

Peeling paint

Blistering paint!

The weather for tomorrow is forecast to be windy, so Colin has cancelled the crossing. We are expecting our new staff Ed Betteridge and Ollie King, along with two short term volunteers to arrive now on Sunday.
