Strong north-westerlies that calmed down during the day made for a more productive day of birding, with a mixed arrival noted. An interesting singing bird was heard in the Withies, so the nets were opened to try and reveal it's identity! To our surprise it was a Lesser Whitethroat giving an unusual  song, feathers were taken (under license) which will hopefully confirm the specific origins of the bird. We felt the bird was of eastern origin - but how Far East we were unsure.

UPDATE - the fabulous staff (Martin Collinson and his team) in the Genetics labs at Aberdeen University have done the DNA analysis on the sample taken from the bird and it was indeed a Siberian Lesser Whitethroat C. c. blythii this is only the second record of this race to be identified in the UK in spring - the previous one being from Bardsey too.

Cuckoo was seen in the Wetlands, however the highlight of the day was JAY that flew over Solfach! It was the first time one has been sighted on the Island since 18th October 1993!

The Observatory staff headed out to the South End to ring the Choughs chicks that were breeding down there, however they were sadly washed out by the recent storms and spring tides.

Other avian highlights of the day were a Grey Heron, a Curlew, four Spotted Flycatchers, a Lesser Redpoll, a Sand Martin, 10 Swallows, seven House Martins
