Bird race day! The students were split into three teams to see how many species they could record on the Island between midnight and 7pm. In the end two teams drew on 61 with the other team getting 60! However, a total of 68 species were logged, the highlight of which a juvenile Sabine's Gull being seen after 7pm!
With strong north-easterly winds the sea of the South End and the West Coast produced a Great Northern Diver, six Arctic Skuas, a Skua sp, a Storm Petrel, a Common Gull, a Mediterranean Gull, 24 Sandwich Terns, nine Arctic Tern, two Dunlins and a Ringed Plover. Incredibly, not one but two Ospreys took advantage of the tail wind and went south with a late Swift in/off north. The first Snipe and Merlin of the autumn were also seen with a Sanderling on Carrag y Honwy with two Purple Sandpipers.
