Another day of strong South-westerly winds today, out to sea numbers were as impressive as yesterday, and the selection seemed to increase as well. A Minke Whale was the highlight of the day, which comes a little later than the good run of animals we had during the summer. Whilst an adult Sabine’s Gull seen off the West Coast in the late afternoon came a close second, the first confirmed record of the year and hopefully a sign of more to come.

Bird wise, seawatching produced 16 Fulmars, 634 Manx Shearwaters, 142 Gannets, 14 Common Scoters, one Black-tailed Godwit, six Arctic Skuas, three Great Skuas, 188 Kittiwakes, 26 Sandwich Terns and 23 Arctic Terns. One Ringed Plover, 10 Purple Sandpipers, 29 Curlews, 11 Redshanks and 54 Turnstones were logged on the Narrows today, another diverse and abundant selection.

Inland, the handful of birds logged included a Grey Wagtail, one Whitethroat, five Blackcaps, 16 Chiffchaffs, five Willow Warblers and six Goldcrests. In general, the day proved to be a successful day of birding.

Redshank

A small arrival of 16 Chiffchaffs across the island today, localised largely within the Plantation
