Saturday 8 June 2024

The day was mostly dry with a brief rain shower and moderate north-westerly winds. A few migrant waders were still trickling through with two Dunlins on Solfach and two Whimbrels on Henllwyn. A Sand Martin flew through the Wetlands, where a Sparrowhawk and Kestrel were also seen, and there was a Collared Dove at Nant.

The afternoon was spent around the East side checking on the breeding seabirds. Kittiwakes are sat tight on eggs, Razorbill chicks are hatching all over the place, and Guillemots are not far behind. The team had more success catching adult birds, with two Kittiwakes and an adult Shag ringed, as well as four Guillemots including a 'bridled' individual!

Today we said goodbye to Jonathan, our spring intern who has been on Bardsey since the start of the season in mid-March. We are very grateful for all of his hard work  over the past few months, and he will be very missed! In his place we welcomed back Ewan, who volunteered here last autumn and will be with us for the summer and autumn. We're excited to have him back on the team, and he got stuck straight in monitoring seabirds within hours of arriving.
