October began on a good note with winds no longer persisting from the south, but instead had moved to a brisk North-westerly which whilst not ideal allows migrants to make their journey south to their wintering grounds.
The highlights of the day were definitely results of some patient seawatching. Gannets moved through in reasonable number some 123 were logged, two Common Scoters, a Long-tailed Skua, a Great Skua, a Mediterranean Gull and a high day total of 669 Razorbills also passed by moving primarily South.
Two Teals were on the new ponds in the Wetlands again (one of which was caught during the evenings dazzling session), one Merlin was again present as was the Water Rail. Five Snipe were flushed from the Wetlands and a Bar-tailed Godwit was the highlight of some low wader numbers today. Overhead passage included 29 Skylarks, 185 Meadow Pipits, five Grey Wagtails, 35 Pied Wagtails, 18 White Wagtails, 25 ‘alba’ Wagtails, six Siskins, 33 Goldfinches, 95 Linnets and three Lesser Redpolls. On the land Dunnocks numbered 17 whilst Robins numbered a respectable 37 birds. Seven Blackcaps, 12 Chiffchaffs and 26 Goldcrests were the only warblers seen today.
Just the ninth Eurasian Teal to be ringed on Bardsey, but incredibly the second this year!
A little experiment into black and white photography in the last couple of days a Chough and a Grey Seal
