Again, the weather was far from ideal, driving rain and strong winds were experienced throughout the day! A walk up to the Plantation in the early morning saw eight Woodpigeons coming out their roost. Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers were in lower numbers, however, this could just be because they are harder to record in these weather conditions. Two Goldcrests were heard, and Chaffinches were quite vocal with five recorded between Nant and the Plantation.

The ewes are currently lambing, and about 420 lambs are expected in the coming weeks. Gareth, who is the farmer on Bardsey has happily informed that he’s had little to know trouble with Ravens so far this season (hopefully this will continue!). Compared to many places, Bardsey does have a high density of these birds and they are a point of contention with many shepherds as they prey on new born lambs, often attacking at the eyes.

Over 200 lambs have been born so far this spring,
almost half of what is expected
Ravens are a common sight on Bardsey and are very impressive, with a deep, foreboding call. However, they are an opportunistic bird with a powerful 'meat cleaver' bill, and will take any meal they can, including vulnerable lambs
Birds around included: four Ravens, 17 Choughs, 135 Oystercatchers, nine Shelducks, two Gannets, six Shags, 70 Herring Gulls, three Wheatears and eight Turnstones.
