This morning we woke up to a fresh, strong North-Westerly wind whipping across the island. The sea was rougher than it has been, so hopes were high for seawatching. There was a passage of ducks earlier on, with seven Common Scoter and 13 Teal; seven Red-breasted Mergansers flew south over the West Coast, a new species for the year. It was a productive seawatch in the end, with one Black-throated Diver, one Fulmar, seven Manx Shearwaters, one Sooty Shearwater, 234 Gannets, nine Golden Plover, one Grey Phalarope, one Pomarine Skua, one Arctic Skua, 11 Great Skuas, 16 Mediterranean Gulls, one Little Gull, 669 Kittiwakes, one Sandwich Tern, one Arctic Skua and 458 Razorbill.

Looking north-west from the Obs

Landbirds were less numerous than in previous days, with only one Redwing, three Blackcaps, three Chiffchaffs and six Goldcrests on the island today. Overhead, the first Brambling of the autumn was heard at the Obs, along with two Siskins and two Redpolls. Hopefully some easterly winds soon will help things to pick up a little!
