The wind shifted overnight and was blowing strongly from the west for the morning census. It was high tide at 6:50 and with few haul out areas, 20 Grey Seals followed Megan and Stuart from the safety of the water as they walked along the Narrows. Two Ringed Plovers and three Purple Sandpipers were recorded at Henllwyn with 99 Oystercatchers and five Redshanks.
A dead Harbour Porpoise was washed up on Henllwyn and it was interesting (if a little morbid) to see this 1m long cetacean up close.
Ringed Plover |
The two Black Redstarts were still at Ty Pellaf and Sam found a Wheatear in the Northwest Fields. A few birds were passing by the West Coast with 12 Gannets, seven Manx Shearwaters, 18 Kittewakes and a Red-breasted Merganser. The afternoon was spent finishing the baffles on the Heligoland trap. This should improve the catching productivity and stop any birds flying back away from the trapping area.
