A calm day had the disadvantage of keeping low cloud over the island for the whole day. The Assistant Warden team had a later start than usual after staying up to 1:30 ringing Manx Shearwaters. It was a busy night with many adults returning, especially now some have chicks.

Birds seen on todays census remain similar to the rest of the week. A roving flock of Starlings fluctuates in number with around 100 seen on the South End this morning. Seven Redshanks were seen on Solfach and Lesser Redpolls were heard at the Narrows, Nant and Cristin. A feeding flock of gulls off the West Coast contained 12 Herring Gulls, five Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 14 Kittiwakes and a Black-headed Gull.

10am is moth o'clock at the Observatory and today was an excellent morning with 184 moths of around 45 species over two traps (including some difficult to identify micro moths). The highlights were Garden Tiger, Barred Red, Dark Arches, Light Arches, True Lover's Knot and Angle Shades

The afternoon was spent starting the second checks of the Manx Shearwater productivity burrows. It is easy to see that they lay their eggs in time with the phases of the moon. Some burrows have chicks that are a week old whilst others are still on an egg. Unfortunately there were a few previously occupied burrows that are now empty. These will either have been predated or abandoned following the loss of one of the adults.

Birds today: 13 Gannets, seven Curlews, seven Redshanks, one Black-headed Gull, 100 Starlings, three Siskins, ten Lesser Redpolls
