Today we welcomed students from the Bangor University Bird Society to gain experience and learn the skills required of working at a bird observatory - we look forward to the week ahead!

The winds swinged from the north round to the south-east which made for a small arrival, the highlights being a Grasshopper Warbler, a Mistle Thrush, 27 Blackcaps, 15 Chiffchaffs, 53 Willow Warblers, seven Goldcrests, two Red-throated Divers, two Buzzards, a Merlin, two Sand Martins, 70 Swallows, and five House Martins.

In the evening, two Jack Snipes and four Snipes (one ringed) were seen on the as Ed and Joel went out dazzling on the South End and the Narrows. However, the real highlight of the night were two male Dotterels that were trapped and ringed! These were the first sighted on the Island since 2012 and the first ringed since 1995.

Other bird species today included: five Gannets, a Grey Heron, two Sparrowhawks, 101 Puffins off the East Side, two White Wagtails, two Rooks, three Chaffinches, a Starling, three Siskins, 32 Goldfinches, 38 Linnets, and two Lesser Redpolls. Lepidoptera highlights included two Large Whites, a Small Tortoiseshell, and two Peacocks
