George opened nets at the Obs and Alex opened in the Withies. Net rounds were mostly quiet, but there was steady passage of Chaffinches, with 16 new birds and one control (a bird that has been ringed elsewhere) being caught between the two sites. Just 24 other birds were caught this morning, including another Reed Bunting, two Grey Wagtails and three Blackcaps.
Five Redwings were seen around the Obs this morning, but evaded capture. Nine Buzzards were seen riding thermals over the mountain behind the Obs. A total of seven Grey Wagtails were seen on overhead passage, as well as ten Skylarks and 49 Chaffinches.
Bar-tailed Godwit |
A Bar-tailed Godwit was present on the Narrows, a rather confiding individual allowing for close views, and a Merlin was also seen. A Jack Snipe and two Common Snipe were flushed from the wetlands.
Merlin |
The feeding flock was still present off the South End, but in reduced numbers, totalling 83 Gannets, 400 Razorbills, c.1500 Kittiwakes, 10 Mediterranean Gulls and 100 Black-headed Gulls. Two Arctic Skuas and a Great Skua were also seen.
Large flocks of finches and pipits were present around Ty Pellaf this afternoon, with at least 100 Meadow Pipits, 50 Goldfinches and 34 Linnets. An attempt to catch them in the nets was cut short by wind and rain, but 2 Goldfinches, 3 Linnets and another Reed Bunting were caught. Reed Buntings are a scarce migrant on here but it seems to have been a good Autumn for them so far.
