It is September already and it is off to an amazing start! It was a bit breezy so after opening the nets in the Withies for a few hours Louis and Stuart moved up to the Obs to ring where the nets are more sheltered by the Mountain. A
Sedge Warbler and
Blackcap were the best birds to be ringed in the Withies with a few
Willow Warblers. Large groups of hirundines were moving through all morning so it wasn't a surprise when the first
Hobby of the year flew over the Wetlands.
Following the hirundine theme Louis placed a tape lure with
House Martin on at the Obs and we ended catching 66 new birds and a control which was ringed elsewhere in the UK. Given that previously the most ever caught in a year was six and the total ever ringed between 1953 and 2020 was 37, this was some achievement.
